Strategic Narrative Underground Session 3

Every Thursday at 9:00 am Pacific, you are invited to attend a free 30-minute talk+conversation about one of the strategic narrative principles in the book that I am writing. I call these meetings the Strategic Narrative Underground Sessions.

In today’s session, we explored the difference between story and narrative.

I believe that this is a nuance that should matter to you because, as I’ve written before:

People will pay for a story, but people will die for a narrative.

Today, I went into detail about this. I explained why this should matter so much to business leaders.

Then, I asked the group to think about a situation that illustrates this idea.

I loved it when someone responded “war” and when another person said “engaging in a big cause”.

I also loved it when Bob Lalasz, from Science+Story shared this:

“It actually makes me think of Facebook. It makes me think about the way that people engage with individual stories. They will exchange things for individual stories. They will exchange, they will click and they will share, but the stories are building into a narrative that will often motivate action, or certainly a mindset. And we've seen that with, we've seen that with politics. We've seen that with attitudes towards vaccines. We've seen it with a lot of things. I loved that line so much when I first read it from you, I still do. And it feels to me like stories are the little tokens of exchange that we’re almost depositing as capital, and eventually, they build a narrative. But, I take that your larger point from today is that one should be, if one is building a strategic narrative, intentional about the narrative and intentional about the stories you select to support that narrative.”
