Tip To Write Your Origin Story

In his book, Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation, Parker J. Palmer wrote the wonderful quote below. I could help you frame your origin story.

“Before you tell your life what you intend to do with it, listen for what it intends to do with you. Before you tell your life what truths and values you have decided to live up to, let your life tell you what truths you embody, what values you represent.”

If you want to build trust and confidence, write your origin story.

Your origin story should focus on the moment(s) and circumstances that life put in front of you to help you define your path. It shows your direction, and it explains why you’re doing what you’re doing. This is a major building block of the narrative to call people to participate in your mission. It establishes credibility and affirms your values.

This story is less about what you had initially decided to do with your life. It is more about how you interpreted the curve balls that life threw at you and what life-changing decision you took as a result.
